Default Lazy album covers?

The album covers I find lazy are the ones where the Singer or Singers or Musicians are just looking at the camera. Mariah Carey's album covers are generally lazy like this. Just her face staring at the camera. Daydream is a prime example of this. If you're going to have the Singers and or Musicians stare at the camera, at least do it creatively. For example, Guns N'Roses Appetite For Destruction Cross Version has the Lead Singer and the Musicians/Backing Singers staring at the camera in animated skull form, which is actually cool.

The White Album is surely a lazy cover.

Yep, a White Album Cover that is literally just that, a White album not only takes the Cake, it takes the whole bakery on laziness.

I've seen people online complain about this matter before leading me to having this question. What is an album cover supposed to look like? Also, shouldn't what is on the album be the more important thing?

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. To me, if a photograph of the singer/act isn't there and instead is just a picture of something else, I guess that would qualify as lazy, but at the end of the day, I guess it is up to them what goes where.

I believe there is an intended intrinsic message behind these artists. Perhaps vanity? As if to say it's "all about" them.., so don't expect any flash or sizzle trying to amuse you?

Gone are the days of Hipgnosis where the album cover made as much a statement as the music inside.

Kinda similar in concept to women in positions of power who refuse to wear makeup, because they don't HAVE to impress anyone...

The Sex Pistols Pink Album cover without them on the cover, just the Title and their name looking like newspaper clippings letters was mentioned something like,"Cool, but lazy album cover.".

Cool

I always thought that a cool, imaginative album cover sold me on the concept of things like "heaviness" or innovation. When something was a simple logo against a colored background, in an attempt to be "minimalistic", then it told me the artist really put no thought into it. I was often wrong, but this was how I thought of it in my younger days.

I completely agree with you, and I really don't understand the point of this whole discussion, and I guess it's pretty subjective what people like in an album cover. I'm fine with a picture of a solo singer or a band on the cover, and I really don't know what else people want or expect to see on the album if not for the artist. And if other people want to think just a picture of the artist on the cover is "lazy" or "vain" well then so be it but I really don't understand that kind of thinking. I'm all for creativity but there again it's very subjective what somebody thinks is a good or a bad album cover. I'm usually fine with a picture of the singer or band on an album cover but if they want to have a picture of something else on the cover then that's their decision and their right. I have plenty of cds where I don't like the cover but in the end I think what really matters is do you like the songs on the album/cd itself.

Ed.
