This always bothered me. Vint and Naomi, were probably in their mid to late forties and just discussing having a child. Vint already had two children, Buzz and Sonya, with his ex-wife, Mitzi, but apparently they were retconned out of existence. Also, did they really think being a key grinder and a supermarket checker was going to support the baby? I hope I’m not coming off as too judge mental, I mean it’s a sitcom, but come on. Then on top of all of that, they was still living with Mama and were practically homeless. They really should’ve thought this one through. Even though they didn’t adopt a child, Naomi still ended up getting pregnant, while still living under Mama’s roof.

It seemed to me like that was always a storyline that was going to come eventually. Vint and Naomi never seemed to think long-term about anything, so not really surprised they'd get pregnant without first trying to save enough to move out, etc.
That her pregnancy was the overarching theme of the last season didn't surprise me either. I like that the series ended when it did and how it did. Of course, their sex life was a running theme throughout the series. I never thought Buzz and Sonya were retconned out of existence, even though they weren't mentioned after the first syndicated episode. There is an argument that that happened, however, considering how many other members of the family still were mentioned in the syndicated years long after the last time they were seen. |

Like you said... If they were in their late 40s, Naomi would have likely only had a limited time in which she could still have children, so I guess they thought they'd better hurry if they wanted to have their own biological child. I think Vint's and Naomi's ages were inconsistent... It was mentioned that Vint was 45 in the episode where he thought he was adopted.. and I THOUGHT Naomi was mentioned as 35 in one episode... BUT they supposedly went to highschool together. |

I guess the history with Vint and Naomi was changed and the fact that they were in high school was demolished. And I don’t know if this makes sense or not, but they really didn’t act like they went way back from “High”, at least not in the syndicated version. |

My friend used to joke, if they were in high school together, Vint must have been a teacher lol No offense to Ken Berry, but I thought Vint looked more like he was pushing 60, especially in the later episodes. Naomi's name was possibly an error... Vint knew her as Naomi Oats, which was her name in high school, BUT her 2nd husband's name was Oats.... so unless she was an Oats and married an Oats.... lol For some reason I get the impression in the syndicated episodes that Naomi hadn't been married before Vint |

I think Betty's age showed more in her only syndicated appearance than throughout the NBC shows. Interesting comments re. Naomi's previous husbands. That storyline kind of went the way of Buzz and Sonya, though in both cases I don't believe those were retconned, just simply not mentioned. |

I think you probably hit the nail on the head, and that Vint and Naomi didn't really think of things ahead of time. If they would have, they wouldn't be... Vint and Naomi.

Yeah I never understood that either. All in all, the picture and lighting were much better in the syndicated years than the NBC episodes, but they made Betty White look so much older in Best Medicine. Still, that remains one of my favorite episodes purely because it's the best overlap between the NBC and syndicated years and it's Betty White's last appearance.

Besides Mama, Ellen is the only character to appear in every incarnation of the show. Family Sketches from the Carol Burnett Show, the movie Eunice, NBC Mama's Family, and syndicated Mama's Family |
