In 1984, Jack Barry was planning to retire as host of the show he created and produced The Joker's Wild and turn the show over to frequent substitute host Jim Peck. But in May, Barry died of a heart attack while jogging in Central Park and his partner Dan Enright took control of Barry-Enright Productions. Some decisions he made didn't go well with the staff, including hiring Bill Cullen instead of Peck.
I watched the episodes Cullen hosted and to me, the show moved slowly than ever. In Adam Nedeff's biography of Cullen, he mentioned that in a whole episode, only one question was used because of the lengthy interviews he had with contestants. I also thought Cullen was slowing down as a host and I felt that Peck should have become the new permanent host. Your thoughts on Cullen's two year run on The Joker's Wild, his last game show. |
