Thought Provoking: Should Life and Death Be Taught in Schools - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

This is on another group and I thought I'd post it here and hear what the Sitcoms think:

I say NO NO NO, it's to come from family and what they choose. Opinions and views can change so much thru life. Teach our children: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic (ABC's).

And as one goes thru life, they can make their choices.

Children need to be children and have fun before embarking into the big world and then they can do what they want to with the life/death issues...good grief....

I was taught about this stuff as a little girl and I've changed my mind so many times and now I can stand firm on what I do believe.

This may not be a question for this group but I'm posting in anyway..

I remember we had a Death and Dying course in high school. I think there were many positive aspects of the class, although the movie we watched was VERY outdated.

In junior high, we had religion class, and that was pretty eye-opening. We had a great teacher who didn't preach any specific dogma, although we learned about Christian beliefs, including lots of afterlife stuff.

I was glad we had some discussion of death and dying in school. Around the time I graduated, my paternal grandfather died.

The best advice I ever got regarding death, though, actually came from a sitcom: Roseanne, episode 5-16: "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home", when Roseanne's father dies, and Roseanne's really got mixed feelings about the father who abused her. Darlene says, "I feel bad that I don't feel bad enough," and Roseanne replies, "You don't gotta feel nothin' but what you feel." For someone raised to believe that guilt is an important part of belief, that was such a powerful statement: it's okay to feel how you feel. It was a very liberating thought.

I'm fairly confident that the thought police would so insist upon what the schools were allowed to teach, that they would muff that up too.

Now, I'd be open to a little thought reform, devaluing human life in context with the overall bigger picture. Because I believe the current scheme is overly focused upon seating us at the head of the table. But I doubt that will happen because too many people thrive on the delusion that "all this" is here for our amusement.

I was an only child, and at 7 years of age while my mom was at work, came home from the playground to find my dad dead of a heart attack. Further, being part of a large catholic family, had aunts, uncles, and grandparents dropping like flies, sufficient that I had been to a dozen funerals by the time I was 15.

I came away from that with the prevailing attitude that "people die", it's just the way things are supposed to be. Enjoy life while you have it, but see death as the finish line, not some horrible predicament to be feared.

I don't believe that our education system has the balls to teach that lesson, so I think they should just be kept out of it all together.

I think it's ok here Dude, I don't think it's so hot. It's opinions about life choices...and this is about pushing this kinda stuff on little ones. I never had it done thru my education and neither did my daughter and her kids I don't know for sure. I know the grandson goes to a university that leans heavily on this stuff and why he chose this school I'm not sure, but as my daughter said "maybe a little of this type teaching can't hurt"... He will ultimately make all his own choices.

I'm so glad I grew up as I did, it was learning and a lot of playing....the good old type playing: Hop scotch, jump rope, jacks and a little later a lot of dancing. And in school later on it was a good series of sports.

And as usual everyone has their stories and I didn't have those as GJ mentions, my family lived long lives...the saddest for my family deaths was when my 5 yr old nephew was killed by a truck...Very tragic hard time and I can still see that little angel's face and he'd be close to 40 now.

I don't believe I'd want to bring a child into this world today, so much crummy stuff out there and the drugs, omg, my childhood was fun and innocent and just plain pretty darn happy and good bolonga sandwiches....

Even if the death isn't natural at all? I can only see natural deaths as a "finish line". Deaths via accident, negligence, etc. can only be seen as a punishment for nothing.

Sorry, but I'm just convinced that human kind has an exaggerated sense of self importance. It's vain, imo to insist that we really matter. Look up in the sky some night and ask yourself if you REALLY believe that "all that" was put there just for your wonderment...

I don't believe so, I believe we just have managed to place ourselves in the center of it like some child who believes the world spins around them.

Every person to have ever been born on this planet will die. Some just take longer paths to get where we all are going. I don't mean that to sound ghoulish or terminal.... I just don't have a lot of "faith", pun intended...

This might be difficult to follow the way I intend it. But I believe over the centuries there has been a certain poetic license interpreted into our existence. People who's stock in trade is flowery embellishment, writing exuberant prose romanticizing our significance...have sold a lot of books by doing so.

Over time, folks have hijacked those fantasies, and tried to fool themselves "that" imagery, was them..

And in the process, we have come to assume our significance.....it's a delusion, actually.
