I was watching the Jackie Gleason TVography the other night, and I thought it would be great to see him on his old variety show again, doing the other characters that made him famous before the Honeymooners.
It would be great if maybe TV Land started showing them again, then I thought, why isn't TV Land airing any of those classic variety shows? Variety programs were a staple of TV in the early days. Guys like Gleason, Milton Bearle, Sid Caesar ruled the airwaves. They are as important to the history of TV comedy as the classic sitcoms are in my opinion... Is there any particular reason why TV land isn't showing them? If anything, I would like to see an occasional special dedicated to a particular show, I would love to see compilations of "Your Show Of Shows" or "Texaco Star Theater" on TV Land.. Any thoughts, classic TV fans? |

There are also:
no "Circus of the Stars" no celebrity-on-game shows rare big guests on television shows and countless other things... it's a sad state of TV today... but, perhaps it's just the nostalgia of it all.... |

I would love to see the entire hour of Sonny and Cher. When VH1 showed it it cut all the comedy sketches out and just left the music parts. Those sketches were hilarious!
Also I wish they would run The Carol Burnett Show .

I agree, there are no Variety/Sketch Comedy Shows currently on TV Land, I know before they used to air The Ed Sullivan Show, The Sonny and Cher Variety Hour and The Flip Wilson Show. It's about time they add more of those, in fact The Flip Wilson Show will be coming to TV Land on July 3rd, 2004 and Carol Burnett & Friends will be arriving on April 12th, 2004, so they are beginning to bring back some of their Variety/Sketch Comedy Shows back, which is a good sign that their might be more coming in the future!
BTW...Thanks TJ, for the Sketch Comedy/Variety/Talk Shows/Late Night TV Board! |

he was one of the coolest man around at that time or any.His laid back demeanor was his pull.he had this ring a ding style. He was sex, comedy all roled into one man.He was not as arrogant as Sinatra either. He didn't have to be the center of attention like lewis or sinatra he loved just kicking back and having fun.He might not had a better voice then F.S but he was certaintly easier to watch at times. He was actually and it's great that lewis admits this that Dean Martin was the spine of the success of their team. All great straightment have great partners but Dean could do comedy as easily as dean without acting like a child or acting childi*****he irony is that dean and lewis didn't stay friends, neither did abbott and costello.Their egos were to big to admit they still wanted the other persons company.D.Son dieing did break the ice abit. The only comedy team that isn't brothers who have stayed together is my dad and Tim Conway even if they aren't technically considered a comedy team their association and touring kind of cements them in the minds of many that they really are a great comedy team for the ages.Reiner/Brooks.
The smothers brothers don't count because they are brothers.Dick martin/Dan Rowan.were great. |

Bring back Dean Martin ??
They never showed him in the first place, but I sure in the heck wish they would. I loved that show, it was awesome. His style of comedy was just a riot. I also loved to hear him sing, he had a great voice. I wish they would have a few hours of variety TV every day, and show the whole hour long show, don't chop it up to a half hour (21 minutes after commercials). Johnny Cash, Bobby Goldsboro, and Mac Davis also had good variety shows. Chad |
