Why did Fred say this to Julio's mother?

In the West Side Story episode, Lamont take out Julio's sister Maria for a date. Fred is very upset about his son dating a Puerto Rican and tell her mother that Lamont's repution in his neigborhood will be ruined if he is seen dating Maria.

I always wonder why his reputation will be ruined if he is seen going out with a young good looking spanish speaking girl. I would think that local females will be more jealous than his reputation being ruined with them.

Being nosey on that episode backfired on Fred since it was him who got caught going with a puerto rican by his friends Leroy and Skillet. They said Fred is out with his spanish teacher LOL

Yup, even in my neighborhood 30 years ago you could not be walking around with a white or latina girlfriend
