Oh No My brother's house is a wreck!

Not only does he NOT have heat, gas, or a working bathroom...but now the ceiling in one of the rooms is leaking!

That house is in desperate repair and...I'm afraid it'll catch fire or collapse...or both!

Since none of us know your brother, how did it get to this point. No job, no money, no no no. Can someone get to him, a friend, relative, health dept?

On the fire subject, I just found out one of the guys in our apt bldg is into cognitive decline and the fire issue came to my mind. Gotta talk to the mgr again.

Does he at least have electricity? Why isn't he paying his bills?

He has electricity...but not yesterday.

We should talk about our options as soon as possible!

I check this post thinking there will be "clues" but don't know if you want anyone to respond or are you just making a statement. I get the impression you live with him and then don't get the impression.

I don't live with him...originally, I was going to, but since he didn't put any work on the house...this is what happened! He also wants to be there when people fix his place...good luck!

What would be the amount for what needs to be done?

Roof repair
Bathroom repair
New furnace

I think it's $10K...I'm giving my brother three options...

If he can, sell the house as a fixer-upper
Fix the house as soon as possible
Find a house for me to live in

I can't live in my childhood home with him right now!

Good luck on getting the house fixed and $10K in my world is not that much money, but everyone has their lives and funds.

Since you are living there too, shouldn't some of the financial burdens also fall to you? Shouldn't you chip in a bulk of that ten thousand?

!
If you've not had heat, be ready fir frozen/burst pipes in the wall, too.

Is the floor in the bathroom rotted? Toilet lose? Bathtub needs replaced? $6-8K
Roof, no mention of the square footage ...$6-8K add another $1.5-2 K if you need gutters downspouts
Furnace $4-5K

How is the foundation? If the foundation is also a wreck, that cost added to the above might make it not worth fixing.

I don't live there...and I only have $1000 to spare...plus, with my dad in a home, it's possible we could wind-up lising the house.

I hope to talk to my brother soon...

The water is all drained in the house...I'll stop-by when I can. I took pictures and saved irreplacable things in safer places.

MAYBE it would be useful if you supplied more details?
You call it your brother's house, but obviously you have a keen interest in it. You say you grew up there, so did you both acquire an equal interest in it, but you call it his house because he's the one living there?

If so, then you have value stranded there , that you can't extract so long as he's being derelict? is that the real problem here? If so, call one of those "1-800-we buy houses" places, and set yourself free.

Right now...it's too damn complicated. My father is in a home, so I dunno if he owns the house.

I do want to talk to my brother when I get a chance...but I wound-up being the parent now, telling him to do something or else!

Because if my father leaves earth...he may just let the bank take the house!
