I wonder about the members here and as they say, ask questions for answers.
I'm retired after about 40 yrs of many professions from sales, newspaper work, exercise videos sales and C/S, and many in between, last job being full time nanny ... lots of interesting jobs in my life. Most here know each other as you have a history, but I don't, so the wondering. |

I worked in commercial real estate most of my life, with short stints of retail and antique restoration to provide a "bridge" to my retirement years.
But the only reason why I chose to respond to this thread is because I find it amusing that after a long life working, the last 15 years of which it was definitely a buyers market (meaning employers had leverage because there was an oversupply of qualified workers)....once I decided to retire for good, now suddenly everyone is bawling about how hard it is to find employees willing to work. Fitting, I guess...just fitting. |

GJ: Well good to hear you at least responded and for all the viewers I only have to guess their professions must be a dark secret or whatever..... So many here appear to me to be secretative on their lives. I've always said about me, a pretty open book. I have no secrets....

I have been a warehouse picking/packing clerk for most of my life. Did a stint as a salesclerk at a western wear store where my brother was the manager. I'm still working, hoping to retire soon.

Bonnie, caregiving has become a major respected and needed job for the aging. People are living longer, family is spread out and so people need to be of "service" in some ways to the aging...they don't all want to end up in aging homes. I helped a couple of my older friends, in their 90's until I could no longer and I have some younger guys in my apt bldg who help me with things I can't do. Something for others to think about who may have time on their hands. Currently I have a neighbor who is 94 and needs so much help and no funds to hire people, I used to help her shop but I can't shop for myself anymore. If I had a bunch of money I wanted to help others, I'd help her, and pay for some help.. wish wish wish.

I did not work but but wanted to raise my own children. My husband was in skilled trades at GM and made a good living. I felt I didn't need to work outside the home. Sure there are some things that we could have had if I had worked but for me personally my family came first. I know it's different now days that a 2 person income is needed to live and that's a shame that the cost of living is so out of control. If I had to start over again I'm sure my working would be necessary.

What you've chosen to do now would not work for many. You have given up a lot of your life to take care of your mother. I know a woman who could not do this and had to hire 24/7 care at her home for her mother. A big decision. I never had to make this decision but my brother in law gave up his profession to take care of my sister full time with her advancing MS. Similar topic.

I was a babysitter in my early teens, then I worked Saturdays in a country grocery store in my late teens. I also worked at the Dairy Dip my senior year of high school. Next I worked as a file clerk at an insurance agency, they paid minimum wage so I quit there and went to work at a Boot Manufacturer which paid better. When it closed, I went to a paper products manufacturer where I still work. I also worked part-time as a waitress but when Covid hit, they closed down for almost a year, so I quit and just work the one job now. I plan on retiring soon.
