September 10, 1937 - June 1, 2021 Actor Frank Birney, 83, passed away at home in Studio City, CA on June 1, 2021 from ALS. Born and raised in Lancaster, PA, Frank Birney graduated from Lancaster Country Day School, Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and HB Studios. Frank led an adventurous life, serving in Army intelligence in Germany, studying at the Sorbonne, and teaching in Zambia for several years. Back in the U.S., he returned to the theater in Minneapolis, touring with several shows and ended up in Los Angeles, where he worked as an actor on stage, film, T.V. and commercials for 45 years. Frank's memorable roles over the years span from the films Dave, Mr. Mom and Fear No Evil, to TV roles ranging from Golden Girls to Dukes of Hazzard, recurring roles on Six Feet Under, Boston Legal and six seasons as a judge on The Practice. More recently, he guest-starred on Grimm and HBO's Room 104 and countless other shows. Frank loved his work, but his extended family always came first. He was predeceased by his parents, Stella Walshe Birney and David Bell Birney III, brother David Bell Birney IV and nephew David Birney deLeeuw. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty G. Birney, sister Jane Birney deLeeuw, sister-in-law Virginia Knorr Birney, daughter Rebecca B. Frank (husband Gary Frank), Anna B. Ross (husband Tobias Ross) and son Walshe H. Birney (wife Caroline Conway) and his beloved granddaughter, Remy Bella Frank, as well as three nephews and a niece.
