Default Whatever happened to Deputy Warren Ferguson?

I know that after Don Knotts left the series a new actor, Jack Burns, was cast as the new deputy, although only as a guest star. He was only in it for one season, but did they ever explain his disappearance? I can't recall.

Coach,

I really don't think they explained Warren's disappearance. The viewers just didn't like Jack Burns being a deputy. This is really not his fault. The viewers thought that Warren was replacing Barney Fife and that just didn't settle right. They were writing Warren's lines as if it were Barney Fife's lines, and I think viewers could see right through it. I don't know if Jack just up and left and figured out that it wasn't working out or if he was fired from the show. I read on www.mayberry.com 's message board that Jack was pretty angry at being kicked off from the show, so that being said- I'd say he was fired. But in answer to your question, I don't think TAGS actually took on an episode to explain Warren's sudden disappearance. I could be wrong on this account though. It seemed to me that he was in it, and then just disappeared without a trace.

It's really too bad, because I think if they gave Jack enough of a chance to really flesh out the character he would've been a great addition to the show. He isn't a Don Knotts or a Barney Fife, but Jack was funny in his own way.

You know, I kind of wish Warren stayed. Yeah, like you said he's no Barney, but he was prob. the best thing in the color seasons.

I Think so too. The first Colored Season is almost as good as the Black and White Ones. But after Warren left it got kinda boring (Although I Still Like Them, Just not nearly as much)

The Warren eps are pretty good and are def. better than the later color eps. If it weren't for Warren, I'd really be turned off by the color seasons. I just flat out don't like most of the color eps. We lost Barney. We lost the fun loving Andy and got the Andy that acts like he's got like a male form of pms. We lost Warren.

I don't know. I'm kind of mixed up about the whole thing. Andy could've pulled out at any time. If he wasn't having fun anymore, he could've stopped. He really had a lot of fun with Don and I suppose Andy thought he could still do the show, even though he'd miss Don. He just couldn't do it. I recall one scene, eh, I think it was Floyd, Goober, and Andy. Maybe it was Howard, Goober and Andy, but anyway they are on this bench. Andy just acts like he'd rather be anywhere but shooting that scene. You can just tell. He could've left after season 6. He could've done one season without Don, just to see how it'd go. If he wasn't having any fun, he could leave.

Edit: And for God's sakes, why did the get rid of the really good characters that showed up occassionally? You'd think since Barney, Gomer, and Warren gone, they'd have the Darlings and Ernest T., and Otis making more appearances. I might have my numbers mixed up, but I think the Darlings and Ernest T. did one or two color eps. I'm not sure about Otis. I want to say he disappeared after Warren left. I def. remember Warren getting Otis interested in the mosaic (sp?) art, but that's all I can remember of Otis. He might've made more appearances, but I doubt it. They totally killed it. Stabbed it right through the heart.

I think I read somewhere that they took out Otis because having a town drunk on tv wasn't as popular or something like that. Too bad, because Otis was hilarious!

You know, I remember reading a post like that on Mayberry.com's message board. Did you ever go there? LouAnn Poovie was my sn. I haven't been over there in ages though, but I def. remember reading that. I wasn't sure if it was true or not.

I've been over there several times, but not in awhile. That could've been where I read that.
