In holiday music today I've noticed that singers are rarely covering traditional Christmas carols and now they are replaced by modern Christmas songs? Is it because people like all kinds of Christmas songs and the new modern Christmas music is replacing the traditional Christmas carols now? Take for example you never hear a singer sing What Child Is This? or Do You Hear What I Hear or even Angels We Have Heard On High and now it seems that Christian artists now sing the traditional Christmas carols on their Christmas albums. Is this a new trend that occurred when the modern Christmas songs debuted? Another thing I'm discovering is that there are Christmas songs that are really sad and I can't figure it out? Like when Christian group Newsong released The Christmas Shoes that was based on the book and movie of the same name and when that song came out I couldn't understand how in the world that song was a hit when it was sad and it was also covered by Country teen pop band 3 Of Hearts. Another song that is very popular is Natalie Cole's Grown-Up Christmas List and when Amy Grant covered it in 1992 it became a hit but I found the lyrics sad and depressing. A final thing I mention is that every time a new Christmas song is released it is a hit for years to come. For example when Wham released Last Christmas in 1986 it was a smash hit and now every singer covers it and the same thing with All I Want For Christmas is You and when Mariah Carey debuted it in 1994 it too was a smash hit and every singer from Michael Buble to Dolly Parton includes a cover of this song as well. While modern Christmas music is nice we need the traditional songs mixed in too

I have a foot in both fields. I love both the standards and the newer material, but for me, when a standard is to be played, and no offense intended, who we hear on the radio singing them will never be my first choice for who gets to sing them.
God bless you always!!! Holly |

I can't stand any of today's Christmas music. I even change Christian stations when they play endless hours of it through December 25. I've noticed that they start playing it at the stroke of midnight on October 31, Halloween, the official start of the shopping season.
I can't deal with these feel-good jazzy bluegrass hybrids of Christmas carols. It's just drecky. It has very little to do with Advent and more about gingerbread and nutmeg. Warm and cozy. The deeper meaning of Christ is not there. Well, it is, but more as an afterthought. "Careful, we don't want people to think too much about it, just make listeners feel good." |

Hi, Bestie! I enjoy the traditional Christmas music the most. The newer songs do not honor the reason for the season and I consider them just music. There are some modern ones that are fun to listen to and fit the time of year, but if you are to really feel what Christmas is all about, remember:
Let there be not one stranger to away in a manger Let there be not one soul left untold Let there be not one face unknown to the face of the one Who will gather the foe For Christ's sake, it's Christmas So for Christ sake, let everyone know They all have the choice, so lift up your voice Make sure they know By Christmas Eve Pray that everyone sees that we've opened the eyes That were closed For Christ's sake, it's Christmas And for Christ's sake, let everyone know For Christ's sake, it's Christmas So for Christ sake, let everyone know They all have the choice, so lift up your voice Make sure they know By Christmas Eve Pray that everyone sees that we've opened the eyes That were closed For Christ's sake, it's Christmas And for Christ's sake, let everyone know |
