The Dick Van Dyke Show aired five seasons on CBS from 1961-1966. Starring Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie, a married man who was head writer for The Alan Brady Show. Rose Marie (Sally Rogers) was originally intended to be the female lead. But Mary Tyler Moore's popularity as Rob's wife Laura changed that plan. Morey Amsterdam played Buddy Sorrell, Rob and Sally's co-worker. Their boss was Mel Cooley, played by Richard Deacon. Also starring the show's creator Carl Reiner as Alan Brady, Jerry Paris and Ann Morgan Guilbert as neighbors Jerry and Millie Helper, and Larry Matthews as Rob and Laura's son Ritchie. CBS wanted more than five seasons, but Dick Van Dyke decided to end while it was creatively on top.
How it got this far 1st Round: defeated The Jeffersons 10-7 It's a Living started out on ABC for the first two seasons from 1980-1982. Three years went by after it was cancelled, then it came back to life for four more seasons in first-run syndication from 1985-1989. It's a Living was set at Over the Top, a fancy restaurant in a huge hotel. The syndicated version was a big improvement because of Crystal Bernard's casting as waitress Amy Tompkins. Also introduced in season 3 was chief cook Howard Miller (Richard Stahl). The cast improved even more in season 4 when Ann Jillian (waitress Cassie Cranston) left and was replaced with Sheryl Lee Ralph as waitress Ginger St. James. Remaining all six seasons were hostess/manager Nancy Beebe (Marian Mercer), waitresses Dot Higgins (Gail Edwards) and Jan Hoffmeyer Grey (Barrie Youngfellow), and pianist Sonny Mann (Paul Kreppel).
