Default When did it become a fad to make reservations to get Santa photos for kids?

Every year I'm noticing that Santa photos for kids have become pricey and more pricey and now i'm noticing that malls have started to make people make reservations to get your child's photo with Santa and I have never figured it out? Is it because this is a new way to get your child's photo with Santa without waiting in a long line and for the malls to make more money? Because ever since Macy's in New York started doing this fad malls around the country started this trend charging people $60 for photos. I remember when I was a little girl Santa photos used to cost a dollar and I would get little prizes and a candy cane along with my photo. But what is so special about a Santa photo that makes it $60? and I can see that this Santa photo reservation fad is gonna be around a long time

It's ridiculous. When I was a kid, it was no charge. I think Bass Pro Shop you can bring your own camera and take a picture for free. And their Santa looks just as good as the mall Santa.

Maybe it's like when the price of tickets to Rolling Stones concerts went into the stratosphere? Being outrageously expensive made them just that much more desirable?

Yanno? I think there is a peculiar mentality that prevails in such instances as well. Parents know how much the world suxx. And so they seek to get pictures like this as a way they can prove (to themselves mostly) that they were good to their kids.
Kinda like patting themselves on the back.....And perhaps the malls have just tuned in on this, and capitalism is ruling the moment?

I worked a Santa Clause set from 2016- 2019 and at the time, i too was stunned to learn about the reservation fad. But you are right, if people have a reservation they don't have to wait on a long line. The mall that i worked for had this policy if we had a line & people with reservations came in, we would alternate between the 2 lines. Usually if a family had a reservation they paid an additional $ 5 fee. We had a few different packages. Also what a lot of families liked, you paid a fee and instead of getting pictures, you would received a link and you could print as many as you wanted/ needed. They also offered a pet night. But I'm with some of the previous posters, i would used to just pick a day to see Santa and wait in line.

Just put them both on ignore, or keep it to the Politics board. We don't need to see drama and insults on unrelated threads.

Wow, I didn't know you had to make reservations for Santa pictures. In the 90's when I took my son to the Mall you just stood in line to get them made. You had to pay the Santa Helper if you wanted the photographer to make the picture. I think it was around $5.00 but they would let you use your own camera if you wanted too. Things are really changing.
