Question Ads that slow your computer down

Are there any ads on the site that slow your computer down?

I'm having trouble with this ad. Each time it comes on, it slows my computer down or even freezes it for several seconds so I'm unable to type. This is the only one so far that does it. I know I can use ad-blocker but some sites won't work if I use it.

A lot of things slow this site down for me, For instance where there are several posters all actively contributing to a single thread, you can "feel" the other posters when your own thread controls become non-responsive, (you hit "post reply" but it takes forever to actually conclude, stuff like that).

In fact, I find the claim that this site once had 10,108 users all on line at the same time, somewhat preposterous....they musta cut back on bandwidth significantly since that time, based upon what I'm experiencing (at times) now.

Sometimes an ad will have malicious content designed to slow you down and force a reckoning.

The full-screen ads freeze me so they won't close immediately--the other other ads are OK. I wouldn't use ad block if it weren't for the ones that freeze it.

I know it can drive me up the wall when the ads show up multiple times and slow down my computer. It's just a few ads that seem to do this. I wish they'd let us have a skip this ad option and substitute another. I don't mind a short ad that doesn't slow down the computer.

If you can click on any of the offending ads and provide the link (or a screenshot that shows the address), I can try to block them. I won't be able to block any ads if they are coming from a third party advertising network.

I can try to block these links for IMVU. It looks like a social networking site.

The site ran better and more consistently 2-3 years ago before our host was bought out. They had to move us to a new server in their own datacenter. Any optimizations and tweaks were lost in the move. I need to find a better package deal.

It would run a lot better with more GB ram. It only has 3GB now. It needs a minimum 8-16GB to run more smoothly all the time. The search really slows it down when you are searching almost 6 million posts. I tried limiting it to every 30 seconds. Many sites turn off the search entirely and just use Google.

The record amount of 10,108 users was on 12-28-13. That number is for 60 minutes, so that wasn't simultaneous. The max connections are set to 800, so there are rarely any database errors.

It was getting about 2-3 times the amount of traffic back then. That number is probably 1,000 real people and 9,000 search engine bots. I've tried limiting the bots because they make many requests per minute.

Thanks for checking into it. I hate to use ad block on here since I know the ads help support the site.

Thanks for your in depth reply. This site has been worse the past couple weeks than at any time in the year or so that I've been here.

Normally, I am prone to conclude that any "slow" problem must be at my end, but recently I've started doing things to better guage this. And I think you have a problem at your end.

Hitting the [submit reply] button, and seeing the post process drag out, on and on, while in another tab or browser all together being able to surf at will...tends to make me think the "slow" is coming from here. If it was on my end, then everything I was trying to access would be slow...

Just simple paranoia, but I'm wondering if the people who make their living coding internet advertisements have found a way to code that causes browsers running add blockers to slow down? Sort of like the advertisers are fighting back against ad blockers, that sort of thing.

Perhaps once they detect an ad blocker running, they start loading a 4 GB animated gif in the back ground, something devious like that?

Lately there seems to be be quite a few instances per day where a post will be delayed going in (like maybe a minute or more), and when it finally posts, it goes in twice. I'm wondering if this has something to do with having only 3Gb RAM. (Kind of off-topic, sorry)

I was told that we have 3 GB RAM, but it might actually be 6 GB. We had 8 GB for many years. The only way they would reduce the monthly bill was by lowering the RAM. I will have to look around for something similar with more memory. I don't think I'm getting the best value right now. We are using less than 100 GB of hard drive space.

CloudLinux
4 cpu
Primary HD 300 GB
Secondary HD 0 GB
Third HD 0 GB
Fourth HD 0 GB
6 GB RAM
Apache Web Server
| MySQL for Linux | No Remote Backup
Server Manage: Managed 24/7

The memory could be a factor with the double posts. Sometimes people just aren't just patient enough to wait for them to go through. They are clicking on the redirect link. People can open a new window or tab until they can see it viewable.

Even if you use an ad blocker, the ad code still has to load. It might speed speed up the experience with large video ads, but I don't think it's very noticeable with standard ads. I've noticed that using AdBlock can sometimes cause a delay on some pages. It will just hang and cause the browser to freeze.

It's going to be slower during the peak times of 3-5PM EST and when there are many searches happening. Editing thread titles or posts can sometimes time out. I have the time out set at 300 seconds. I had it time out while doing a search the other day, which is rare. I'm not sure if raising it will help. I think it's just getting hit hard by search engine bots on some days.

Deleting the duplicates takes it awhile. I've never used the redirect, I just wait on any delay. Yes, timeouts are rare.
