The Mary Tyler Moore Show won a record amount of Emmys that wasn't passed until Frasier. It aired 7 seasons on CBS from 1970-1977. This was Mary Tyler Moore's first starring role after playing Dick Van Dyke's wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Mary played single woman Mary Richards here. This was a workplace comedy set in a TV newsroom. It also made history as a sitcom that spun off drama Lou Grant. Lou was the boss at the newsroom played by Ed Asner. Mary Tyler Moore also had two other spin-offs, Rhoda (Morgenstern played by Valerie Harper) and Phyllis (Lindstrom played by Cloris Leachman). Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) was the blowhard face of the newscast who often screwed up. Georgia Engel recurred as Ted's wife Georgette. Murray Slaughter (Gavin McLeod) worked closely with Mary writing the newscasts.
This spin-off of Petticoat Junction aired 6 seasons on CBS from 1965-1971. Some think it was a victim of the rural purge, but I say it was more a victim of the access law being passed taking away several hours from the broadcast networks each week. Eddie Albert starred as Oliver Douglas, a New York lawyer who wants to move to the small town of Hooterville and become a farmer. His wife Lisa (Eva Gabor) was opposed to this at first. But Lisa ended up enjoying Hooterville a lot more than Oliver. She also fit in better with the out there residents. Frank Cady reprised his PJ role as store owner Sam Drucker, this time as a regular. Hank Kimball (Alvy Moore) was the inept county agent. Hank Patterson played Fred Ziffel. His pig Arnold became one of the show's highlights being heavily featured. Fred's wife Doris was played by two different actresses after the first one died. Eb Dawson (Tom Lester) was Oliver's farmhand. Pat Buttram played corrupt Mr. Haney, who was always ripping off his customers. He sold Oliver the decrepit farm. |
