Brief Mention of "Unsolved Mysteries" on "Dark Side of the Ring"
I recently watched the Season 3 episode of Vice's "Dark Side of the Ring" that focused on the Smith wrestling family. The father, Aurelian "Grizzly" Smith, was an abusive pedophile.
His notable children include Aurelian Smith Jr. "Jake the Snake", Robin Smith "Rockin' Robin" and Michael Smith "Sam Houston". Jo Lynn Rogers was half-sister to the Smith children on their father's side and on November 20, 1979 she was abducted from her home in the Cherry Park trailer court near Tatum, Texas. Her husband's ex-wife, Faelyn Rogers, was arrested in Dallas later the same day. The Texas Rangers were called in to help find Jo Lynn but no body has ever been found. The search lasted a week, particularly along the Sabine River. Faelyn Rogers was found guilty of the aggravated kidnapping of Jo Lynn Rogers on March 19, 1980 and sentenced to 30 years in prison. In the episode, Robin Smith mentioned that she had a discussion w/ Jo Lynn shortly before her disappearance and she felt that Jo Lynn had wanted to tell her something important. Robin was able to piece from Jo Lynn's vague assertions and questions that she was getting ready to come clean about the sexual abuse done to her by their father, "Grizzly" Smith. The Smith children said on the "Dark Side of the Ring" episode that they had wanted to go on "Unsolved Mysteries" and pleaded w/ their father for his participation. They told him, "Dad, these people specialize in missing persons and murders! Don't you want to know what happened to your daughter?" and he flat out refused. Here is an article I found online from when this happened. https://www.newspapers.com/clip/5856...-smith-rogers/ |

I can imagine Jake giving an interview in his wrestling promo voice.
I suppose an Unsolved Mysteries segment could be why WWF asked Rockin' Robin to sing America the Beautiful at WM5. One thing that will never be on UM is why the WWF never asked Rockin' Robin to sing after that. In all seriousness, this case is a sad one. Jake briefly mentioned it on Beyond the Mat in the scene where he is outside working with his father. He also mentioned the electrocution death of his stepfather in the scene. |

Gotta give kudos to Jake for finally getting and staying clean. I don't think anyone who knows of him really expected him to still be around. |
