Music Aaliyah’s Music is Finally Available for Streaming

Aaliyah’s ‘One in a Million’ Lands on Streaming Platforms, More Music to Drop in September
by Ariana Brockington
August 19, 2021

Fans of Aaliyah can now listen to and celebrate more of the late R&B singer’s music on streaming services.

At midnight eastern, the “Try Again” star’s 1996 album One in a Million landed on Spotify and other major digital platforms. Aaliyah’s portfolio also includes the 2001 album Aaliyah — featuring the hit track “Rock the Boat” — which will be available Sept. 10.

The soundtrack for Romeo Must Die, in which Aaliyah contributed to the soundtrack, will drop on streaming platforms Sept. 3. Her 1994 debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number is already available.

Aaliyah died at age 22 in a place crash in August of 2001. For years, her estate has been engaged in a dispute with Blackground Records 2.0 about the release of her music.

The company is a relaunch of a label co-founded by Barry Hankerson, who is Aaliyah’s uncle, former manager, and label chief. Hankerson owns Aaliyah’s masters while her estate controls her catalog.

On Aug. 4, the Estate of Aaliyah Haughton released a statement that said, “This unscrupulous endeavor to release Aaliyah’s music without any transparency or full accounting to the estate compels our hearts to express a word — forgiveness.

Ultimately, we desire closure and a modicum of peace so we can facilitate the growth of the Aaliyah Memorial Fund and other creative projects that embody Aaliyah’s true essence, which is to inspire strength and positivity for people of all creeds, races and cultures around the world,” the statement read.

When it comes to singers who are no longer with us such as Michael Jackson Whitney Houston and others the music companies have always done the right thing by keeping that artist's music library in tact and in print. Aaliyah is one of those artists that hasn't had much talked about her since her 2001 death and with the release of her classic albums this may be a treat for newbies to discover Aaliyah's music and find out more about her. But I think once Aaliyah passed away she was forgotten about and replaced by new singers such as Olivia and Ashanti and when Ashanti debuted in 2002 the critics compared her to Aaliyah and they even dubbed her the new Aaliyah. But now that all of Aaliyah's album's are gonna be streamed now I hope Aaliyah gets new fans to her music

That isn’t true as she’s been referenced and acknowledged years after her death. She had a Lifetime bio in 2014. Her brief marriage to R. Kelly was also brought up many times during his controversies.

I remember discovering Aaliyah the day after she passed away and though I had heard her single If Your Girl Only Knew while at Disney World I bought that single and I thought Aaliyah was impressive but it wasn't until her death that I bought her last album and thought it was impressive too. I then was able to find a copy of One In A Million at a Goodwill and bought it too. The only Aaliyah album I don't have is her debut and I should've grabbed it at Kmart when it was really cheap. I think Aaliyah was planning for a comeback and I think had she not died her self-titled album would've sold more. But as I mentioned in my earlier post since Aaliyah's death there has been singers like Aaliyah that really have been successful but people will be able to enjoy Aaliyah's music time and time again
