Default Why do the Olympics get so overhyped every time that they appear?

When the Summer and Winter Olympics debut I can't figure out why they get overhyped from the time they are announced and by the time they debut people get so tired of hearing about the Olympics it gets annoying. Is it because people think the Olympics are the second most popular sporting event next to the Super Bowl and the World Series? Because I have never seen so much hype on the Tokyo Olympics as any other sporting event in history. A second thing I noticed about the Olympics is how come NBC gets to show them and not ABC or CBS? Does the Olympics have a deal with NBC to show them? I remember when CBS was the king of the 1998 Winter Olympics and they caused CBS to get huge ratings for the channel but once CBS was done the Olympics were moved to NBC. Is it because of a successful audience or NBC wants to be king of sports? Another thing is merchandise of the Olympics and I have seen anything from video games to clothing and even American Girl has Olympics clothing for their dolls and what I can see is they hyped this Olympics too much and people will get tired of it after they end

Hi, Bestie! The Olympics used to be a big deal. Now they are just trying to make it a big deal even though nobody cares about it anymore. This Olympics is especially stupid. No audience and Athletes hating the countries hat brought them there.

I think it's best to see the olympics as "sports through the eye of the athlete" in contrast to professional sports which is fought for the almighty dollar.

Professional sports is a business first. Many people overlook that. SO the olympics are seen as the zenith of competition, unfettered by the business angle.

And no, I'm not trying to play "holier than thou" ...I personally won't even bother to follow the olympics

But, that's how I tend to see the olympics, a chance for the athlete to bask in their own glow...sort of a "here is your unicorn, little girl" opportunity

It seems like there is some kind of athletic competition on TV all the time now. So it makes the Olympics seem like no big deal now. And especially this year with no spectators.
