In the episode today on METV where Beaver wins the locket at the carnival, Eddie calls Gilbert "Hydrant Head", which is a sobriquet that I've never heard before.
Pondering the possible inspiration, I guess it's because Gilbert's ears stick out so much? Interesting they would write this into a script of such a starched and pressed TV show. I wonder if Donna bothered to contemplate that the gift was a gesture of affection that might have impact going forward? Or if perhaps she never got beyond the "a gift for me" stage? |

I imagine Donna's future life would be a continuing drama.
Beaver should have said to Donna, "You look like the paper girl I beat up." |

I don't recall having ever seen this particular episode before, so I guess I've just "won the lottery" as far as missing it each time it has come up in the rotation over the years.
This episode really struck a chord with me personally, as I have a history of being overly generous with near strangers/casual acquaintances. I even recall a time or two,... years ago, gift being refused AND being scolded by the intended recipient that I shouldn't expect to be able to buy their acceptance. At least none of them ever called me "Hydrant Head"

Gotta admit though, One doesn't have to be an Arthur Danto to interpret where the inspiration comes from.

Beaver wanted the $15 fishing reel
Beaver won the $20 locket the carnival guy offered Beaver the ash tray Beaver could have said "I want the $15 fishing reel instead" and would have got it End of Episode ... Near the end of the episode Beaver talking to dad Dad, about girls ... does it ever get better ? Ward's answer: Well Beaver I wish I could say so BUT the fact of the matter is it gets an awful lot worse before it gets better ! SO TRUE ! |

I like the scene Donna (Chrystine Jordan) is upset her father (Paul Langton) insists the locket be returned. Donna should win a best overacting award on LITB for that response. Mr Yeager an award for worst "peruka" as my mom would call them.

Thanks for looking those up! And I thought I had a good vocabulary...
Chrystie Jordan's emoting in that scene with her (Donna's) parents wasn't helped by the script. That cornball line about ruining my life or whatever was pretty silly. Her father's response line about raising one of the Gabor sisters was pretty good. |
