Death - the "Punk" band - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Is anyone here familiar with this group? There is a claim that they were "the first" Punk band. Before the Ramones and The Clash and whoever else you think of when you hear the word "Punk music." That always leads to a debate of Punk "experts" debunking the claim.

The few people I introduced them to, individuals easily 20 years older than me that remember the golden age of Punk, went to concerts, etc., say that Death "isn't Punk." Well what are they then? Rock? Metal? These people are also the type to discount bands like X as Punk because, "What do kids in Southern California have to complain about and rebel against?"

I also heard these people say three black guys in Detroit making Rock music made absolutely no sense, so it therefore couldn't be Punk.

I wasn't around during the Punk 70's (thank God) and am no expert. But I DO like some songs from The Clash, Dead Kennedy's, Bad Religion, Sex Pistols, etc. Death's was the only album I've ever listened to in it's entirety the first go around. I certainly thought it was good enough to be considered Punk today or 45+ years ago.

Anyone else out there like them?

This is interesting, because metal fans are very familiar with the pioneers of death metal known as Death, fronted by Chuck Shuldiner. But I'll have to look into this punk pioneering band called Death.

I'm sure if the original members of The Ramones were still alive, they WOULD like to take credit for having "invented" the genre known as punk. I have a feeling that this band called Death were one of the first inventors.
