Jean is Dorothy's lesbian friend who fell in love with Rose. Now Jean knew that Rose was heterosexual so why in the world would she tell Rose that she fell in love with her? What was she hoping to accomplish? All it would do is make Rose uncomfortable which is exactly what happened when Rose pretended to be asleep and snoring when Jean confessed. What was Jean's end game? I think she should have kept it to herself. There was no reason to profess her love to Rose.

Basically I agree. You don’t go to a hardware store to buy oranges. Rose was sweet about it though.
Most people come across others they find extremely attractive, but have to sense to realize when they’re unavailable and move on. Jean’s emotions may have been clouded because of her recent loss. |

Of course it was funny how Blanche had her pride wounded that Jean wasn't attracted to HER even though Blanche had no interest in other women that way.
Oddly, it never was commented on by either of them why Jean wasn't attracted to Dorothy (her friend) and Dorothy seemed perfectly comfortable having her sleep in her bed despite knowing that Jean was usually attracted to other women. Would Dorothy have wanted a man in her bed who wasn't attracted to HER? |

Getting back to Dorothy, she and Jean probably had a long close platonic friendship-so I don’t think the bed thing was THAT odd. Although I likely wouldn’t be too comfortable with a similar situation. |

I think it was odd too. Having Jean in her bed would be like sharing her bed with her brother. Neither one of them would be physically attracted to her, but I think both situations would be super awkward.

It really depends on the dynamics of their friendship; I could see it happening in some instances where the two people were friends for many years.

In the mid 80s gay characters on TV shows were not that common. This episode broke the ice some. However in these early days they still played off a stereotype that gay people will pursue straight people. It was played in brilliant comedy though. I am sure the censors in those days made the script make Jean leave the bed once she confessed her love for Rose.
If you remember, Dorothy hid the fact that she was gay from her housemates until she fell in love with Rose. |
