Default When Roseanne and Dan got married.

I am late in season 8.

One thing I was wondering, is that when Roseanne and Dan got married, was Roseanne pregnant with Becky?

Did Dan and Roseanne get married, because Roseanne was pregnant?

Two more questions.

1) Why did they have Darlene go to college early in season 6, at 16 years old?

2) Why did they have Becky elope and move to Minnesota, in season 5?

Also, what are Becky and Darlene's ages when the show starts?

I feel like they aged Darlene and Becky a little faster, and kept D.J.'s age a little slower.

The answers to #1 and #2 are that Sara and Lecy left the show to go to college themselves, and thus their characters were written to just visit on an occasional basis.

Another question:

I see in Season 9, Sarah Chalke is back.

Goranson couldn't find time anymore?

I am trying to avoid spoilers I might encounter, especially with what might happen in seasons 9 and 10, if I myself try searching for things Becky related.

In the Roseanne Revival when the basement flooded and Dan was trying to move everything so it didn't get ruined you see a box that says "Wedding Dress 1973" Becky wasn't born until 1975. That would have made Roseanne 21 and Dan 22 when they got married so no, they were out of High School at the time by the time they were married and Becky was born.

However, it was implied in the show that Roseanne and Dan never finished High School but was never explicitly stated.

Hmm, what would cause them not to finish HS?

What years were they born?

I thought they might have started college, but just didn't finish.

BTW, I'm done with season 1 of The Conners, but haven't started season 2. So if anyone wants to refer to events up until then, that is fine.

Dan was born November 10, 1951, and Roseanne was born November 3, 1952, according to the Roseanne/The Conners Wiki page. No, they never went to college that is why it meant so much to them when Darlene went to college because they themselves never got to go.

Also, I just remembered in the Season 8 episode "Another Mouth to Shut Up" Roseanne begins recounting when the Conner Women got married. She states Becky was 17 when she got married, Roseanne was 18 and says "Finally, a Conner woman put it off till she was 19 years old." referring to Darlene.

Something else, it was stated that multiple times in the series that Dan and Roseanne's relationship progressed very quickly in High School so it would not be farfetched to say at some point in 1970, when she was 18 she became pregnant, dropped out of High School and got married to Dan. Sometime after she probably lost the baby and then 5 years later had Becky.

Maybe this is why I thought Roseanne was pregnant with Becky when she got married, because it seemed like she was pregnant right around the time I thought she finished high school.

What exact references are there to Roseanne being pregnant at 18?

Also, if she did drop out of high school, and lost the baby, couldn't she have returned to high school to finish it?

In the series, it was never officially stated if Dan and Roseanne graduated from High School, nor did it ever say they hadn't graduated. However, it was mentioned a few times throughout the series that when Dan and Roseanne got together things moved very quickly in their relationship, and it wouldn't be far-fetched to say at some point Roseanne may have become pregnant with their child and that is why they got married when she was 18.

Even if this is true and that was the case and she was pregnant at the time they were married, that would have been 1970. If this was the case and she lost the child, she probably could have returned to school but I think she chose not to.

Whenever she talks about High School, the only thing she seemed to enjoy was hanging out with friends, her sister, writing, and going out with Dan. Other than that she seemed not to like anything else about the school, so if she did leave I could see her turning her back on that chapter of her life, never looking back and never regretting it either. Then in 1975, Becky was born.

Good answers, thanks.

Yes, it would be an adjustment going back to HS, if she had been pregnant around 1970, and then lost the baby. Her friends wouldn't be there. Dan might not be there (if he had already started doing drywall by then).

Plus she may have had some job (before Wellman's), so she and Dan needed money for housing, etc.

I guess it was implied that she and Dan couldn't live with her parents anymore, when they were 18, even if temporary. That might have helped if Roseanne wanted to go back to finish high school, but as you said, she just might not have.

Surprised neither of Dan or Roseanne's parents ever brought it up, if they didn't finish high school, because I would think it would have been an important turning point.

Perhaps if Jackie was also working somewhere, Roseanne followed suit and worked somewhere too (again, pre Wellman's, where they'd end up working together).

Also, I guess if Ed didn't go to college, and he at least had a decent job as a salesperson, then there might not have been that desire to go to college, or finish high school, if they could have a decent job/career like Ed did.

One more question.

After Mark Healy tried taking an auto class at college, before dropping out, and the plan for Becky became to go become a EMT or therapist, there wasn't a follow up to that. Are we to assume that Becky at least started taking classes in one of those topics?

Also, what episode was it where Dan caught Mark skipping auto class? Would that be considered going to college, even though he didn't finish the class, and joined the city garage instead? Or does someone have to finish one class, to be considered going to college?

In the episode "Construction Junction" Roseanne mentions that Becky was applying to colleges. This is the only follow-up we got with Becky and the topic of college, which is a shame honestly. I think it would have been great had them done a few episode arc with the episode "Becky MD," before finally resolving it.

As for your other question, Mark dropped out of trade school in the episode "Suck Up or Shut Up," as to whether or not that is considered college, I can't answer that question because I don't know. Dan and Roseanne referred to it as school both in that episode and the episode that followed up afterward "Busted," but as to whether that is considered college I am honestly not sure.

Also, an added note about Becky going to college. It doesn't get mentioned much among fans but it is something I noticed watching reruns. After Mark dropped out of trade school in Season 6, we are lead to believe Becky did not go to college, because it is not verbally mentioned again until Season 8.

However, in Season 7 there are a number of episodes where Becky has a textbook open studying, there are even times she has a notebook beside her with writing in it where she had taken notes. This makes it clear that at some point after the episode "Busted," Becky started going to a community college.

In the episode "Girl Talk" Becky even says to Roseanne "Mom, I should be studying," When Roseanne doesn't give up trying to talk to her, Becky proceeds to tell Roseanne thinks she knows what Mark's issues are. He feels she is moving away from him because she is going to school and he's not.

Just to give my thoughts on this. In the episode "Busted", Mark states he never wanted to go to school but went because Becky made him go. He stated that she should be the one going to school not him. So him caring about her going to school and he wasn't, I don't think was the issue.

I think the issue was they were going through what a lot of couples go through. At this period of time in the series, Mark and Becky were trying to have a baby. Between him working, her working, and going to school they weren't able to make time for each other and it was affecting their moods and causing them to fight often.

Great finds, for the references to Becky studying, and having a textbook open.

Thanks for figuring out what episode Mark dropped out of trade school.

I consider it college. If art school is college, then so is trade school. Anything non high school that adults take, would be college, to me. Especially if there is a focus on something, whether art, writing (David, when he applied), or the type of things Mark Healy would have learned.

Agree with your last paragraph, they weren't having time for each other.

Yeah, I like your idea of resolving what would have happened if Becky and applying to colleges.

Here are some possibilities:

1) She doesn't get accepted.

2) She gets accepted, but she and Mark can't afford it. (And working part time would have detracted too much from studying.)

3) She gets accepted, tries it, but doesn't like the environment.

4) She gets accepted, likes it, and does pretty well.

5) She gets accepted, but either a new college friend or a professor causes an interference in she and Mark's lives. What that interference is, is up to the writers to decide

Can you find an episode from season 7 with an open notebook? I will also try a little bit to browse through the episodes, on my DVR. I still have the series recorded, I'm waiting to catch up on The Conners, before deleting Roseanne, just in case there's something old I want to refer to. I haven't started season 2 of The Conners yet.

Also, during season 9, they could have used that lottery money to open up the college options Becky applied to. That could have been another consequence.
