S3 E6 "Beaver Takes a Walk'. Come on Beaver... 20 miles? Ward gives Beaver a pedometer. Says he walked 20 miles a day. Beaver tries to duplicate to win a bet. If school is 1 mile each way. At 3 mph pace. That's close to 7 hours walking back and forth. I've biked 20 miles. Say 10 mph. It was 2 brutal hours, even back then being in good shape. Then there's proper hydration even if by a miracle Beaver pulled it off. I've parked my car and walked 5 miles quite often. But at a leisurely pace. That's probably the longest distance I've ever walked. Even as young and gullible as Beaver is. And no internet. Look up a city 20 miles from Mayfield. Ask yourself "could I walk there in one day" ? Even a kid would say "nope".

As much Ward's fault as Beaver's. He knows how gullible and naive Beaver is--he should never have said it, never should have exaggerated. He admits as much later, and even gets Beaver another baseball glove to replace the one he lost in the bet.
I suppose one could say that it was an argument in the school hall, and it escalated to a shouting match, with Beaver publicly defending his dad's honor. He should have backed down, that's another lesson he could have learned. In his parting shot, Whitey warned him he was gonna lose. |

I grew up walking a lot, so I evolved into a marathon man, of sorts...walking...not running. It used to amaze me when I worked at a very large shopping mall, how some people will drive around in the parking lot for 20 minutes looking for a parking spot close to a door. (Christmas season). Would I look forward to a 20 mile walk? Probably not. But even in my 50's @ 240 lbs,.. I thought nothing of a 5 mile walk, and would regularly ride my bike to work on nice days...13.5 miles each way. I believe that a willingness to apply ones self is a major factor. Now in my 60s, a walk through a big box store is often more than I want to put myself through |

At the end Ward admitted to Beaver he was exaggerating. Like I said above, to make up for it he got Beaver another glove.
I agree a ten-year-old should have doubted it, but in another episode (or it could have been this one), Wally said, "He'll believe anything you say." Larry should have doubted it since he appeared to be less naive--he was with Beaver. I really need to re-watch this episode! |

The glove Ward shows June, and the glove he gives Beaver appear to be two different gloves.

I used to do a lot of 10 speed biking. Once on an isolated country road I had a doberman pinscher chase me. I never got to a fast speed as quickly as that. Was able to out peddle it. Literally peddling for my life.

If Beaver walked 20 miles he could have gone surfing in the ocean.

I think that he made a poor choice in deciding to walk back and forth between two fixed points repeatedly. Had he instead chosen a fixed course of a single 20 mile lap, then a sense of adventure could displace the monotony.
I walked 11 miles late one night after my car got towed and I didn't have cab fare...Hawthorne Ca to Rolling Hills Estates...in my late 30s...so I think 20 miles is doable |

The paint shaker was a pretty good idea. They should have tried it.

Beaver at age 10 was what 4 ft 9 in max? Pretty short strides. Made me think of 2 guys I worked with. One took tiny sliding shuffing steps. One had unbelievable long rubber leg strides like "Monty Pythons" silly walks.
