Ralph wants to get married because he has been given a management job with the oil company he works for.

Does Ralph go to college with Betty? Why is he being promoted from a gas station attendant to a management position? Without college, I do not see the promotion.

Now there's a good question! I wonder if Ralph is a year older than Betty; thus, he had graduated the year before.

It's interesting that he was going to propose though--she did date him, but she had a variety of other boyfriends over the years.
