Hi everyone
I am currently writing my master thesis about the translation of Wordplays in Sitcoms and I've chosen How I met your mother as tv series, since it is full with wordplays. I wanted to ask about two wordplays that I didn't quite get. I thought it would be best to ask native english speakers so here I am. The first one is in Episode 3x02: Ted: That guy. Look at how easy he has it. Barney: You and me, we have to bend over backwards to get a woman to, well, bend over backwards. I got here the general meaning of the wordplay and I know it has a sexual connotation but what exactly does bend over backwards mean in the second case? Is it an expression you would use in a "sex" context? The second one in Episode 4x12, where Ted is talking to Barney about his "love-hate" relationship with Robin: Ted: One minute we're just laying into each other, and the the next minute..well, same thing. Also here I get the pun but in the second meaning of "laying into each other" I can't really picture what that means. Is it like hugging each other? Or being one on top of the other? ![]() ![]() Anyway, thak you to anyone who takes the time to answer me ![]() ![]() ![]()
