Maura Tierney is turning 56 today. Tierney grew up in Boston, and studied dance and drama at NYU. After she graduated, she moved to California, and made her screen debut in an ABC TV movie, Student Exchange.

For the next several years, Tierney made regular guest appearances on series like Family Ties and Law & Order, and also had a few small film roles. She landed regular roles on a pair of short-lived sitcoms, The Van Dyke Show and 704 Hauser. In 1995, she got her break, with a regular role on NBC’s NewsRadio.

After the end of NewsRadio’s run, Tierney made a guest appearance on ER as a nurse named Abby Lockhart in the fall of 1999. Abby soon became a regular, going from nurse to doctor during Tierney’s decade on the long-running medical drama.



Tierney received an Emmy nomination during her time on ER. During her NewsRadio and ER years, she also appeared in significant feature film roles, costarring in Primary Colors, Forces of Nature, and Insomnia. She had starring roles in Oxygen and Scotland, PA.

After she left ER, Tierney was a regular on the short-lived ABC legal drama The Whole Truth, and had recurring roles on Rescue Me and The Good Wife. In 2014, she became a regular on Showtime’s The Affair. During its five year run, she won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and received her second Emmy nomination.
