In one post or another I have mentioned about June being nosy and overprotective toward Wally and Beaver. But on this post, heading toward the midway point of Season 5 on my post-work Leave it to Beaver binge, I have felt that she has violated the boys personal space, snooping through their bedroom and listening in on their phone calls. That has always be why June Cleaver has not been my favorite TV mom. That title goes to Carol Brady.
Anyone think that June violates Wally and Beaver's personal space? |

As Chuckie said when his mom asked did she ever hit him, all the time. June even snoops thru their trash.
Once in awhile, she slips. Had she been up to par, she would have found all the Merchant Marine papers that Wally was keeping for Lumpy. Also, later she would have found all of Beaver's send-back notices and bills from the record club. As for Carol, she may be a notch above June, but her thing was over-reacting on colds, sneezes, etc. When Greg insisted he was fine, she was taking his temperature. When Cindy had a sniffle, cancel plans. Call the doctor when the kids have the measles--bulletin--there's no cure for a virus. |

I for one would've found June's overzealous mothering stifling to the point I'd have to constantly/continuously work or manage how I conducted every aspect of my being a kid in her house. Not just watching my back, covering my tracks, paper-trails etc, but even managing my emotions and expressions, lest she read into them and try to connect them to all the other dots. That would be "work" quite frankly, and would in way deprive one of the much vaunted and relatively carefree childhood.
It'd be like having Lenny Briscoe from 'Law & Order' tracking your every move no matter where you went. |
