Default Was Florida too old for James?

I know James and Florida had good chemistry together on Good Times, but sometimes notion doesn't escape me that James might have been too young to be married to Ester.

I mean even if we look at both of them physically, they seem like odd couple. James having an excellent physic (no big belly ) and being good looking, he probably could have his pick of any women he wanted to marry. Florida is not a bad looking women, but she doesn't match up with James in term of look or body.

Ester was 19 years older than James, and it does show. Given the cast members of GoodTimes, Carl (from 4th season) might have better match for Florida as a husband. And Willona a better match for James as a wife.

This is a very common theme with respect to Lear and his casting of African American actors and actresses. Sherman Hemsley was 36 and Isabel Sanford was 57 when The Jeffersons started. Redd Foxx was only 51 when Sanford and Son started (Fred Sanford was 65), Grady (Whitman Mayo) was about 42 when the show started. Jimmy Walker was only a few months shy of his 27th birthday when Good Times started, John Amos is less than 8 years older than Walker.

Wow! Isabel Sanford was a good looking 57, she looked a lot younger than that ! She and Sherman looked around the same age !

You could easily see that Florida looked at least ten years older than James in some scenes.

That’s because

George acted a lot older than he really was in real
They most likely put some makeup on Sherman Hemsley and made his hair gray
Isabel Sanford didn’t look too bad for 57

The only thing I could picture Florida saying to George is

“If you don’t stop talkin like that I’m gonna warm your butt up”

What about James and Weezy Jefferson? I could picture them kissing.

And even weirder is that on 'Maude' her husband DID have grey hair but somehow he seemed to have swum laps in a Fountain of Youth between Tuckahoe and Chicago (in addition to having his name changed).

They made him look older on maude since he was Florida's husband and for some reason on GT they made him look younger
