Ward tells June it won't be bad riding in the back seat of Eddie's car, with a board under the seat--it'll be just like riding a buckboard.
What the heck is that? |

Hmm. Ward thinks June knows what riding one is like...

That is an odd thing to think June has experienced. Then again, maybe he is warning her of what is to come. |

Horse Drawn ? just how old is Ward and June ?
A buckboard is a four-wheeled wagon of simple construction meant to be drawn by a horse or other large animal. A distinctly American utility vehicle, the buckboard has no springs between the body and the axles. [1]The suspension is provided by the flexible floorboards of the body and a leaf spring under the seat(s). |

That's a good question. Maybe Uncle Billy told him about them.

June drove a buckboard back and forth to school when she worked as a schoolmarm in Gabby Gulch.

The 30s and 40s had a lot of them still. Gosh, I bet people used them on ranches and farms even longer than that.
Look at some movies about the great depression or wartime in the sticks. Lots of them, even at church.

Oh it gets clearer now. Ward's family in Shaker Heights had one on the farm. So he knew the ride...

Yes! And that is why I said what I said about June, but maybe she and Ward visited the modern dairy in Shaker Heights and he took her on a ride in a buckboard around the ranch.

The age-old debate about where Mayfield is. I like the Shaker Heights theory, and there is a Mayfield OH--both are in Cuyahoga County. But it's been debunked by other things that have been said on the show. I also don't think it's a rural area that would have farms, but who knows?, maybe it was in the 60s.
They're obsessed with it over on Facebook, as they were on the old TV Land boards. |
