How did M&M's classic holiday commercial get so popular?

Ever since it made it's debut in the 90's I've never figured out how the classic commercial for M&M's became popular? Is it because M&M's wanted to compete with Hershey's with their holiday commercial with Hershey's Kisses? I never understood how in the world this commercial is such a classic when all it shows is Santa freaking out and fainting when he sees the M&M's spying on him. I haven't seen this commercial much so it tells me that M&M's have retired this commercial and is now airing a new commercial this year
