I was listening to my Donna Summer album and when I heard the song MacArthur Park I have never figured out what MacArthur Park was? Was it a dessert someone made? Because the lyrics mention that "MacArthur Park is melting in the dark all the sweet cream icing flowing down" and every time I hear the song I have gotten curious to know what MacArthur Park's really about. I also know that the late Richard Harris sang it as well as Glen Campbell and Weird Al Yankovic sang a parody to it called Jurassic Park. Is there an actual dessert named MacArthur Park?

I remember hearing that song sung by Richard Harris decades back and thought the song was so goofy and I never did like it. Sometimes you wonder how the song did so well and I remember the song was somewhat long. Over 4minutes which was long in the early 1970's

Oh, so that's what the song MacArthur Park's really about? My uncle who loved Donna Summer used to play that song all the time on his 8-track player and MacArthur Park was one of his favorite Donna Summer songs
Thank you for the reply Bonnie and Merry Christmas Bestie |

The song is a bundle of metaphors. According to it's writer, Jimmy Webb, It's an abstract painting, but in musical form. It was about the decay and failure of a relationship he was having, where the MacArthur park in LA was a frequent meeting place for them. Extra point: The song "By the Time I get to Phoenix" was also written by Webb, and represented the "follow through" of this same relationship's failure. |
