WERE THERE ANY CARS ON PETTICOAT JUNCTION?
I DON'T REMEMBER ANY
I DON'T THINK THE SHADY REST HOTEL EVER HAD A PARKING LOT.

No, cars were very seldom seen in PJ, and the Shady Rest did not have a parking lot. But that is supposed to be part of the anachronistic setting-- a country inn accessible only by a wood-burning train on a railroad which was overlooked by a company cancelling such unprofitable services with the transition to automobile, air, and streamlined diesels, instead of local rail service in a farming area. In the early 60's the world had become so technical and complex that looking back to a less complicated way of life was somewhat attractive, so the idea of PJ was to set the scene in a place which about 50 years seemed to have forgotten. The hotel, the general store, the train, and even many songs they sing could be used in a movie set around World War I.

I remember that the episode where Betty Jo is about to give birth begins with Mrs. Douglas (Eva Gabor) crashing her car in front of Sam Drucker's store. She explains to him that Mr. Douglas is teaching her to drive and then she spells out a grocery order in her usual dizzy fashion and then Sam tells her about Betty Jo about to have a baby. So apparently one family (the Douglases) did own a car, being from the big city and all, but no one else seemed to, being very happy to use the train.

In the later shows when Orian(I think that was his name) dated Bobby Joe, he had a jeep.

There was no car access to the shady rest for the first three seasons. However the very first episode of the fourth season 'Young Love' has a jeep pulling up to the front of the hotel.

I watch the show every morning on MeTV and I'm up to when Kate leaves the show and every once in a while you see a car, especially when they were in town.
