Jacqueline Scott, the prodigious character actress best known for her recurring role as Donna Kimble Taft, the sister of David Janssen’s protagonist on the TV drama “The Fugitive,” has died at the age of 89. Scott died July 23 at her Los Angeles home from natural causes, her son, Andrew, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday. She also had a memorable role playing Walter Matthau’s wife in the 1973 film Charley Varrick.” Born in Sikeston, Mo., in 1931, Scott arrived in New York City during the mid-1950s to pursue an acting career. In 1955, she appeared in the original stage production of “Inherit the Wind,” according to the Internet Broadway Database. Three years later, she would co-star alongside Jim Backus in the horror thriller “Macabre.” On the set, she would meet her future husband, press agent and TV writer Gene Lesser, according to the Reporter. Lesser reportedly died just several weeks prior to Scott’s passing. During the early 1960s, Scott appeared in many TV series, including “Have Gun — Will Travel,” “The Twilight Zone” and “The Untouchables,” according to IMDb. “I wanted to play all different characters. And I got to do that,” remarked Scott in a 2016 interview for Classic Film & TV Café. “Once I’d be the good girl and once I’d be the bad girl.” She also portrayed Dennis Weaver’s wife in Steven Spielberg’s 1971 directorial film debut “Duel.” One of Scott’s most memorable film roles was as Nadine, the wife of bank robber Matthau, in the crime thriller “Charley Varrick.” The film was critically lauded and Matthau snagged a 1974 BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance. “I loved working with Walter Matthau on ‘Charley Varrick,‘” recalled Scott. “I had admired his work for years.” She found steady work throughout the late 1970s and early ’80s on the likes of “Barnaby Jones” and a recurring role during the first season of “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Scott leaves behind her son and two granddaughters, according to the Reporter. |
