Movie 5th "Scream" Film Gets Jan. 14, 2022 Release Date

Neve Campbell in Talks for Scream 5 Return
by Nick Romano
May 7, 2020

Nearly a decade after Scream 4 hit theaters in 2011, the slasher franchise star Neve Campbell says she's currently "negotiating" to return for Scream 5, the pseudo-reboot directed by Ready or Not helmers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

"We’re having conversations. I have been approached about it,” Campbell told Rotten Tomatoes in an interview. “The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out... We’re negotiating, so we’ll see."

David Arquette Officially Confirmed to Star in New Scream Movie from Ready or Not Directors!
by John Squires
May 18, 2020

David Arquette has been officially confirmed to star in the upcoming relaunch of Scream, it was announced today by Peter Oillataguerre, President of Production for Spyglass Media Group, LLC!

Arquette said, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new. ‘Scream’ has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.

Plot details are under wraps but the film will be an original story co-written by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, “Castle Rock,”) with Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak producing for Spyglass.

Creator Kevin Williamson will serve as executive producer. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not, V/H/S) will direct and the third member of the Radio Silence trio, Chad Villella, will executive produce alongside Williamson.

Principal photography will begin later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina when safety protocols are in place.

Radio Silence said in a statement today, “It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the ‘Scream’ movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers.

Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of ‘Scream’ to life.

Williamson said, “I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next ‘Scream.’ Their take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way.

‘Ready or Not’ was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the ‘Scream’ universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

Vanderbilt said, “Just the fact that we get to sit in a room with Kevin Williamson and talk about a new ‘Scream’ movie is a dream come true for me. For years I’ve wanted to see a new ‘Scream’ movie, and now we get to help make one.

We want this to be a love letter to the movies Wes and Kevin created together and to the fans.

Courteney Cox to Reprise Role of Gale Weathers in New Scream Movie
by Clark Collis
July 31, 2020

Courteney Cox will reprise her role as news reporter Gale Weathers in the upcoming fifth film in the Scream franchise. Back in May, it was announced that Cox's former husband David Arquette, who plays Dewey Riley in the horror series, will also reprise his role for the movie.

This new Scream is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – of the filmmaking group Radio Silence – from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney," said Radio Silence in a statement. "We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!

The film's principal photography will take place in Wilmington, N.C.

I would have watched it anyway as I've enjoyed the film franchise, but seeing as Radio Silence is directing I'm really interested, I've liked everything they've been involved with- VHS, Southbound, and Ready Or Not. I haven't watched their other film Devil's Due yet.

Did you check out the tv series? It’s not in the movie continuity, but I enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2. The third one wasn’t as good, it was also unrelated to 1-2.

I'm now looking forward to the new Scream movie. You can't do a Scream movie without the main 3 IMO.

I watched the TV series. Willa was awful as the Sydney type character. I feel the supporting cast, Bex, Carlson, and John, carried the show. I agree season 3 isn't as good. It would have been nice to see the first two seasons get closure, but MTV wanted a PC show and that's why the cast and crew were fired. What's worst about what MTV did is that they didn't even air season 3 to support the changes they made. They shopped it off to VH1 after they screwed over the fans of season 1 and 2. It was a complete waste of time.

Things were also complicated by the Harvey Weinstein fallout since he held the rights to Scream. I remember the 3rd season being delayed a lot. I binged watched all 3 seasons on Netflix.

The Scream series was one of my favorites, back in the day. It was a slightly smarter horror franchise than most other slasher films.

I saw the first three in theaters, and don't even remember the fourth.

This is the reason I enjoy the Scream movie series. Sydney was the only intelligent scream queen who made sure the villain was dead by shooting them in the head instead of leaving it open for them to come back. I also like that it took two times with ghostface to have a traumatic experience on Sydney to go into hiding in part 3. It was more realistic than having her go into hiding after the first time like they did with Laurie in the new Halloween movie where it's a direct sequel from the original 40 years ago and she's in a safe house. Scream will always be the smartest horror franchise IMO.

Part 4 was crazy. Emma Roberts did a superior job in that twist. My ranking of the Screams goes 2, 1, 4, and 3. 2 will always be my favorite because of the story, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Laurie Metcalf in it, and Jamie Kennedy gets killed off. I just can't stand that guy's acting.

Yeah, his comedy is eh but he's super cool in-person. I met him at a horror con back in 2014 and I remember he was quite shocked to see the SCREAM VHS.

I also asked him what he thought of SCREAM 4 and he said that he didn't dig it.

(Also, looking at the cover again I wonder why they used a pic of Skeet Ulrich with the goatee when he didn't have that look in the actual film. He looks Johnny Depp-ish.)

I hated when he joined Ghost Whisperer. He was annoying. He also didn't have the chemistry with Jennifer like Jay had the previous seasons.

I bet he didn't dig 4 because he wasn't in it. He had a short cameo in 3 that was dumb. Overall, 3 had a weak story and added a new aspect to 1 which was eh. Wes wanted to end 2 with a Ghostface looking down on Sydney walking away from the reporters. I wish he would have done that since they continued the franchise. It would have made the story in 3 feel a little better. I feel like they just threw that in there to add a new twist.

I don't pay attention to covers of films. They rarely ever get them right. For example, Drew and Jada are the first kills in their films. They get placed on the cover of the releases. Scream 3 and 4 covers didn't follow suit like that so why give Drew and Jada special treatment when their total amount of time in each film is 5 to 10 minutes out of approx. 120 minutes?
