Who has seen the pilot episode? It opens with Fred playing a piano and ends with Lamont chasing Fred upstairs with a broom. There is also a porcelain figure involved. Lamont’s character is angrier and less sympathetic than in the regular series.

Yes, it's called "Crossed Swords". I've read that they toned down Lamont's treatment of his father, certainly after this episode, if not the next few.

It's no worse for Lamont to treat is father bad as it is for Fred to do the same.

I read on TV Tropes that the early “Sanford and Son” scripts were based on those of its British “father” “Steptoe and Son”. British comedy can be more caustic.
