Default Ann’s father is such a jerk

I can’t believe how disrespectful he is to Don, calling him “Hollinger” and being so nasty to him. I keep waiting for Don to grow a backbone and stand up to the guy, but he never does that I can remember.

I like the character of the father. Calling Don "Hollinger" isn't an insult that's the way a lot of men talk when talking to each other they use last names. On the job I called many other guys by their last name, it wasn't meant in disrespect, it's just what you do, or at least what Lou and I did.

Also the father is a great character added to the show. A show needs characters who just don't play it straight, it makes the show interesting and funny. If it weren't for characters we would never have had Uncle Joe or Fred Mertz and Uncle Arthur. These were not straight polite nice guys they were characters and that's what Lou was. I think the show improves anytime Lou is in the program.

Actually, I think Lou Marie is one of the funniest characters on the show. The actor Lew Parker would have made a great Uncle Charlie on My Three Sons. The interplay between Lou and Donald makes for some great scenes.

Also I think deep down, he really liked Don, and probably thought he would make a good husband for his daughter.

I agree with you AND ALSO

Mr. Marie’s bark was worse than his bite.

Yes.

One episode that was SO funny was when Ann and Don visited the Maries in Brewster, and Lou used the word awry, but pronounced it awree. Well, Donald couldn't let that go by, and a big argument ensued. I haven't seen that one in awhile--I'll have to watch it again. I think it's a season 2 episode.

Yeah, I remember that one. Mr. Marie could sure be obstreperous and exasperating. But he DID know deep down that Don was a gem.

I love Fred Mertz, and I never found him as mean-spirited as Mr. Marie. And while I get that men call each other by their last names sometimes, that’s usually in friendship. With Mr. Marie, it was because he didn’t like Don.

Fred seemed like he’d be a fun guy to hang around with. Mr. Marie was just a big blowhard.

But I get that they needed a character like that on the show. I just wish the portrayal had been more nuanced.

Well, calling him Hollinger was as the lines were written. The actor does the lines per the script, or the director deals with it.

The overall tenor was that they wanted to portray an overall mistrust of their relationship, both by Mr. Marie, and to a lesser degree (because the Hollingers lived in St. Louis), by Mrs. Hollinger. With Mrs. H it played out as Mabel Albertson's usual characters are: snooty, prim, and proper. With Lou, it was gruff and suspicious. Point being, this is how the powers-that-be wanted the role played.
