Edna Garrett, played by Charlotte Rae, was the housekeeper during the first season of Diff'rent Strokes, from 1978 to 1979. That's why the Drummonds appeared in the first episode. The character was so popular that the producers decided to give Charlotte Rae her own show. Rae returned on DS for a guest appearence in season 6
