In the world of sitcom, it always has been easier to do a spin off-since all characters are known and have builtin audience-rather than creating new sitcom with new characters.

Its a gamble that sometimes pays off. In case of spin offs Sanford's Arm and Grady, it didn't.

The only spin-off that was a mega hit was The Jeffersons. Maude was successful, but it wasn't the mega hit that The Jeffersons was. Spin offs that failed were Three's A Crowd and The Ropers.

SA is not what I'd call a spin off. It was basically S&S without the main characters and it still doesn't explain why they just didn't cease production.

The show was supposed to continue with Demond Wilson managing the Sanford but he left due to a contract dispute and then they had to retool the show at the last minute.

The show would have lasted a lot longer than one month if Demond was on the show which was proven in jan of 78 when that show lasted 6 months.


That's why the Sanford House is still being used because Demond Wilson was supposed to still be living there

If Demond would have stayed with the show, it probably would have last longer than his other sitcom Baby, I'm Back which only lasted for 13 episodes.

Probably because it would have been a continuation of the same series without fred. His other show a totally different situation with all new people

I think this could have been a better show if it just had all new characters and didn’t have the Sanford and Son connection. Without Fred and Lamont, it just didn’t work with the supporting characters. Now the 1980 revival Sanford with just Fred and his new partner Cal I recently saw on Crackle and I actually thought it was pretty good. Much better than Sanford Arms.
