Our neighbor growing up was named Bert, and we found out it was short for Humbert. Never heard of that one other than him.

I think I've seen the name Gil Fates in production credits. Is Gil aways short for Gilbert?

Nope. I worked for a company owned by a man named Guilford for quite a few years. He signed all his correspondence "Gil"

Joseph Gilbert Fates (September 29, 1914, Newark, New Jersey - May 1, 2000, New York City) was an American television producer.

Nicknamed "Gil", Fates was the executive producer of What's My Line? Fates produced the game show its entire quarter-century span of CBS and syndicated runs. Fates and panelist Arlene Francis (who debuted on the second week) were with the show from 1950 until it ended in 1975. Yes. My mom's brothers had a friend named Gilbert. It was sort of a popular name in 40s and 50s.

Not Gilbert but we knew a guy they called Burt. His real name, Warburton!!!!! Hey Warburton Cleaver. Sorry that’s not Ward. Oh yes Humbert Humbert- James Mason.
