Actually, Ellie May har two chimpanzees for the duration of the series: In the b&w episodes it was a male named "Skipper", who acted as a sort of confidant for Elly May.
In the color episodes it was a baby female named "Cousin Bessie", who, I suspect, was put in to emphasize Elly May's maternal instincts, since marrying the character off would've destroyed the series dynamic and made "The Beverly Hillbillies" just another domesticated sitcom, instead of the wild, sophisticated satire we've all come to love. There was also a couple of episodes of side-splitting hilarity featuring the family's attempt to adopt a wild gorrilla from the zoo, but that's another story... |
