Fans of “Gidget” agree that the series was canceled too soon (I’ve never watched it, so I don’t have an opinion). But had the series continued for three years or more, wouldn’t there eventually come a time where Sally Field could no longer credibly play a teenager?

Are you not aware of the fact she was actually 19 when the show started?
What else is new? |

After a couple of seasons, Gidget would have simply gone on to a local college (like most TV teens in long running shows) -- Santa Monica City or more likely UCLA where her dad teaches? And then she would have started leading innocent campus unrest while still surfing.

Sitcoms evolve to varying extents, so she could have gone on to college, become a working girl or she could have become married after high school. Sally probably could have played a teenager easily for five years, if the series had lasted that long. For many sitcoms to keep the show fresh, story lines and situations change. That may be more true today though, rather than back in 1965. |

Sally just looked young, she was small to begin with so always seemed like a kid. She made a really bad TV movie "Maybe I'll Come Home In The Spring" in 1971 extolling the virtues of eating garbage off of picnic tables and taking drugs till you OD when she was actually 25 and she was playing a teenager then in that movie.
So, sure Gidget ended much too soon, Sally could have played Gidget into the early '70's and I'd have been happy a whole lot happier than seeing Sally playing every low life role out there to spread the lib bull about how terrible it is to be a good family member, love your country and respect your elders all while living in the best country in the world. This movie was a good example of very early America hating claptrap coming from libs. |

No conservative would ever dream of eating garbage, that's a privilege that libs have reserved for themselves and their fellow bums (visit any democrat run city and say hello to the garbage eating bums lying in the street and defecating, a democrat's idea, no doubt, of keeping America beautiful) nor would any conservative ever dream of taking drugs, other than an occasional aspirin for a headache given to him listening to the utter nonsense spewed by commies today otherwise known as democrats.
How do I know? That is a question that can only be asked by the ignorant. Every bit of this movie has commie democrat propaganda stamped all over it. Wake up and smell the coffee, or in this instance you might try investigating the subject before you leap. |

How nice it must be to tell yourself everything is rosy, all commies mean no harm, kiss a commie today.

It is probably a waste of time, but I will say that I was not discussing politics! I was only trying to make another point! One too many times lately, I have heard people make sweeping generalizations about certain groups of people. It is tiresome and nonsensical. It is like saying that people with red hair live in one story homes without a basement, are not willing to wear deodorant and eat caramels for breakfast. Normally, I do not post a response to these types of discussions and I see now that I should just continue to ignore these types of silly posts about liberals and/or conservatives among some other topics. People obviously believe very strongly in what they are saying to be true and that is fine with me. I'll have to be more selective and careful of who I am dealing with!

To get this thread back on track..
In a interview back in 1966, Sally actually brought up the producers complaining that all teen shows remained stuck in time. The plan for "Gidget" was for the title character would age a year every seaon, so Gidget would go to college and even get married. And if you remember how Sally looked on the final season of "The Flying Nun" in 1970, you could buy her as a high schooler even then. |

Yes, this definitely was a problem! The show was cancelled way to soon—but the eps we do have, few though they are, mske very nice viewing.
