Was Princesses Any Good?

Reading today's SO blog of Fran Drescher's new sitcom Indebted that premieres tonight (also stars Steven Weber), I found out about Princesses. That show with Fran from 1991 only lasted 7 episodes, the other stars were Julie Hagerty from Airplane! and Twiggy. CBS didn't do it any favors putting Princesses Fridays at 8:00 against Family Matters the first year it led off ABC's TGIF block. Regardless of Princesses' quality or lack thereof, it was probably good it flopped. Otherwise we might not have gotten The Nanny two years later.

Not really. It seemed it had all the elements of opposite personalities that COULD have made great comedy but somehow there simply wasn't any true chemistry between Miss Hagerty, Miss Drescher or Twiggy and it just didn't gell. Not surprised it sputtered and died so quickly. Not unlike 'Baghdad Cafe' with Jean Stapleton and Whoopi Goldberg.

Short-Lived Sitcom Potpourri (XIV)

Thoughts: Although all three of its leads are well-defined, this early example of a 1990s “Singles in the City” sitcom — where the domestic format has been overtaken by friends, whose romantic pursuits are the focus — is saddled at first with a contrived setup, and then forced to make do with a cast that, sadly, lacks chemistry… with each of the three women feeling like they’re existing in separate series. Meanwhile, the writing, from the Barry Kemp universe, is par for his course — occasionally amusing but not spectacular — and elevated only by Fran Drescher. She’s the series’ clear standout, bringing a likable, big energy to the material that lifts it off the ground, earning its only decent laughs. So, while the show never congeals into a healthy whole, it’s fun to see a pre-Nanny Drescher commanding the screen.
