Question Why doesn't Bea smile?

In this picture on the board, and many other pictures I've seen, Bea Arthur rarely smiles. She always has a type of "know-it-all" look on her face.

What's up with that??

Maybe she's just not a happy person. Some people are like that. But, she has a beautiful smile...she should use it more often.

Smile

I noticed that Bea had her teeth capped later in the run of the show. Her smile wasn't all-that-great when the show first debuted, but later on she smiled more after she had her teeth brightened and bonded!

I'm not surprised. Bea seems like an angry, unhappy person and her character Maude was never really happy and was always yelling in the show. I think Maude's personality is similiar to Bea's.
But haven't you noticed that Bea most of the time mentions Maude in a conversation and/or an interview? Just my thoughts.

I think it's because her character in "Golden Girls" is a very serious person.

Wait, are you talkin' about in the show, or in real life?

Cause I agree with Will and Grace Fanatic...Dorothy was not a happy character. She didn't have the childlike optimism of Rose, or the hungry horniness of Blanche, which made them smile.

Just remember Dorothy's line from the UFO episode...

"I'm a teacher......a substitute teacher......a divorced substitute teacher, oh, beam me up, Scotty!!"

But yeah, her character was so downtrodden, negative, sarcastic, arrogantly smart, bitter...so if you're talkin' about the show itself, there wasn't a reason for her to smile a whole lot. It fit Dorothy perfectly, and added to her visual humor against the others.

Now if you're talkin' about Bea in real life though, that's another matter, and I dunno...

I think she mentions Maude because she had wonderful success with that character. Plus we'd you be proud of being 'Maude'?
