To hospital interns GOMER is an acronym for an unwanted patient. It stands for Get Out of My Emergency Room. Just a little ER trivia. Sorry.

There's a character in the Bible's Book of Hosea who was named Gomer . This Gomer was a woman and the wife of Hosea . I wondered if Mama Pyle named Gomer after the character in the Bible . For that matter, a "gomer" is medical slang for a patient in an emergency room who is not in need of emergency services . It does stand for "Get out of my emergency room", reflecting the annoyance of the doctors . It first appeared in widespread print in the medical novel The House of God by Samuel Shem, and although used mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, it is still used today . By the same token, a "gomer" is a student who studies too much and is too concerned about his grades . A word can decrease in popularity, but there'd be a need for the word "gomer", so it'd stick around .
