Why is Ben Stone too much of a push over?

First off he should've told Grace that if wants to file for divorce, then she's committing adultery because of the fact that he's never cheated on her in their relationship and that they both agreed to be with each other through better or for worse til death they part and that Jesus specifically said in the Bible that if a girl divorces her husband for any other reason besides sexual immorality then she is committing adultery according to Matthew 5:32; and he should've refused to leave his own house and demanded custody of his kids.

He also should've told that jerk off at Bobby Vance's funeral that leaving would be the most disrespectful thing to do and that he didn't get him killed and that he has no intention of leaving until it's over.
