Can someone explain why at basketball try-outs a coach would tell a kid he’s no good after about 15 minutes of practice? Couldn’t they have had the coach tell Beaver to practice a little at home and see how he does next week? Instead he boots him off the team. Even Mr. Willits gave Beaver a couple of chances to play his clarinet at band try-outs and that wonderful tune, America.

The writing could have been better. Doyle should have said, "Get in some practice and maybe do some shooting with Wally, and come back tomorrow. We'll see how it goes then."

They'd have to do some rewriting of some later scenes, but it could have worked.
