Are VHS Tapes Still Being Sold In Stores? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I just thought I'd post this to ask if VHS tapes are still being sold in stores. I noticed today when I went to Future Shop that they were all DVD. VHS tapes aren't becoming totally obselete yet, are they?

No, not yet. From what I heard the only company that is really serious about phasing out VHS is Circut City, but Im not sure totally on that. Remember when CD's became popular, cassetts werent just taken away, they died a slow natural death much like what will hapen to VHS.

Are you talking about movies on VHS? Or blank VHS tapes? If your talking about blank VHS tapes I predict those will be around for a long while still because I don't believe their is any such thing as blank DVDs to record shows on. Well there probably is but I'm sure it costs a LOT of money.

Circuit City is the only place that I know of for sure that is going to quit selling VHS tapes. In my opinion DVDs are a much better investment. They have so much more to offer and are only a few dollars more that VHS tapes. The cost of DVD players are coming down too.

I hate to say this but I think VHS will be gone just like records how they have some but not many, rare. I hate "DVD" VHS is wayy better with vhs you can leave it out even on the floor and it will be fine but with DVD'S it'll get all scratched up and my cats will play frisbee with them and it'll skip scenes. That happened with The Exorcist for me when it was in the middle of the movie it would skip back to number one. argh I hate that!!

I certainly hope VHS tapes will be around for a while because I don't even have a DVD player that will record yet. I still prefer the ole VCR. Actually, I've yet to see the blank DVDs you can record on... Anyway, I guess whe VHS tapes become extinct I'll have to shell out some money to but a new DVD player and DVDs...

VHS will still be around in some capacity until it's cheap to record TV programs onto DVD's, etc.....

Yes, VHS tapes are still being sold in stores. Obviously, I don't know much about the situation in America, but over here shops aren't so much cutting down on the amount of tapes they hold but they are selling them very, very cheaply now. I guess they need to give people more of an incentive to buy movies on VHS cos the majority of people now opt for the DVD's.
Tapes will still be around for quite sometime to come as a method of recording though because, although it is possible to record onto DVD, it is extremely expensive. Recordable DVD players cost a small fortune so untill the price comes down people will still use their VCR's.

Hey, audiocassettes are still sold in many stores, with CDs becoming mainstream years ago. The recordable cassette media is still present in many places I go to. I suspect that VHS will become the same.

I recently bought the top-of-the-line casstte walkman (25-hour batt life, mega bass, AM/FM/TV/Weather reception, digital readout, etc.) for $25. VCR's will continue to decrease in price. (I got a new JVC model for my birthday for only $69.99) Even in ten years, you will still find T-120 tapes on the shelf.

Pre-recorded things could be very different. Small sections of "bargain" and niche releases will be relegated to a small section or be carried by specialty shops.

When the DVD-R/DVD-RW becomes mainstream ($100-150 for recorder, $3 for media--or inflation-comprable prices

) then VHS will become the second player, but I don't think it will go the way of the eight-track and die entirely. In fact, they still make record players!

Yeah, I hope vhs doesn't fade out altogether. I only buy blank tapes to record stuff, but I haven't bought any movies on vhs in awhile. I'm moving into dvds a bit.

Yea I've started doing more and more of that.

I heard that Circut City wasn't getting rid of all VHS, that they were just selling more DVDs and less VHS.
