Default Disliking Darrin

Are there any episodes where you just did not like Darrin and his behaviour?

I've now watched two episodes in a row where Darrin's attitude is just terrible. The first is "How Green Was My Grass," followed by, "To Twitch or Not to Twitch," two episodes where Darrin is just out of control with this "no witchcraft" attitude, that is until he'd like her to use it to benefit him.

"Twitch" is the worst of the two since in mid rant about Samantha using witchcraft, Darrin actually decides he'd be happy to have Samantha use witchcraft because it would be helpful to him. One minute he's yelling at her and the next he's trying to get her to change their car's tire, since it's raining and they're already late for a dinner party.

They always work things out in the end but Darrin does really go overboard on Samantha, much too often.

Were there any times where you thought Darrin went too far with his anger over Samantha using witchcraft?

In the episode, "Samantha's Wedding Present" Darrin quickly overreacts to Endora bringing Samantha a gift and is so nasty to Endora. She puts a shrinking curse on him and it takes a drunken bum to make Darrin see how unreasonable he's being. So by this point they've made Darrin less thoughtful than a drunken bum.

In the episode, "It's So Nice to Have a Spouse," Darrin refuses to allow Samantha to see to some witch business even though he's just going to go play golf, they hadn't planned to be together, so Samantha has to sneak out and have Serena replace her for the day. Darrin does come around and realize how selfish he was being on his own, which might be progress for Darrin, but too much of their conflict comes from Darrin's refusal to accept Samantha for the witch that she is.

"What's his face" overreacts a lot. He really has a short fuse and is too judgmental.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Dick York's charm to bring the character to life. However, he isn't very likeable at times.

Darrin could be drip to Sam at times. And not to swift when you consider how he snarks Endora - a witch of considerable powers.

All of them. I sort of like the show, but I could have really liked the show if Darren had been more likeable.

Okay, I recently rewatched "It's Wishcraft" from Season 3. It involves a dicey plot involving Darrin's parents visiting and Tabitha wishing her favorite people to pop into the nursery. Samantha requests assistance of Endora to help keep Tabitha in-line. Darrin makes a phone call demanding Endora to be gone from the house. He doesn't listen to anything Sam is telling him; he rudely cuts her off. The scene makes me wince.

The one episode that stands out to me is "Darrin Goes Ape" with Dick Sargent. The writing in this was way too harsh. Darrin was absolutely hateful to and about Serena (who was pretending to be Samantha and heard it all). For Darrin to not only refuse Serena's gift to her face, but to also insult her as he did was just mean and nasty. It's the episode where I wonder why Samantha stayed with him any longer.

Also "Samantha Loses Her Voice" with Darrin threatening to punch Uncle Arthur in the face seemed way out of character for York's Darrin. Season 5 Darrin was meaner than we had seen overall for much of that year as it was.

The Dynamics of the show as to how the characters such as Darrin, Samantha & Endora etc. interrelated & the Premise of the show was unchanged by the changeover from DY to DS, everything was maintained as it had been with consistency.

Dick Sargent was merely being consistent within the role of Darrin who refused to live a witchcraft controlled life and insisted on a normal life.

He was merely standing up for those beliefs in his behavior to Serena.

Darrin with Dick York in the role was vastly more nasty, hateful and angry and confrontational with Serena and all of Samantha's witchly family and friends.

Episode #72 What every Young man should know is a good example of this where Darrin is screaming at Samantha even as he is proposing to her, it seemed like he would deck her at any minute. This was very much in character with how Dick York played Darrin throughout his run, especially in seasons 3 to 5, he seemed to display a gentler, softer characterization of Darrin in the first two seasons, towards both Samantha and her relatives, almost Dick Sargentlike in that sense.
