Viacom and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are expecting to share between $450 million and $500 million for five-year streaming rights to the long-running Comedy Central animated series, according to Bloomberg News. "As many as a half-dozen companies" are vying for South Park, which is currently available to stream on Hulu, Bloomberg reports. Viacom, Parker and Stone expect a deal to be done by the end of 2019, with the winning bidder revealed as early as this weekend. The $500 million figure would put South Park on par with Comcast's recent $500 million deal for The Office and Netflix's recent $500 million deal for Seinfeld. South Park is a hot commodity after 23 seasons because it's still one of the most-watched shows among young men and Comedy Central has already renewed it for another three more seasons. UPDATE: Netflix is no longer in the mix, reports Variety. South Park streaming rights land on HBO Max in a deal worth more than $500 million The streaming rights to South Park will go from Hulu to HBO Max starting in June 2020. The five-year deal covers South Park's 23 seasons plus the three seasons that Comedy Central have ordered. Variety says the deal is valued at between $500 million and $500 million. New South Park episodes will appear on HBO Max 24 hours after their original airing on Comedy Central. |
