Does anyone know what Mrs. Varela says to Ward when she finds out he might speak Spanish? Also what does Chuey say to Ward when he comes downstairs yelling after Beaver insulted him?

No, but I have a suggestion for sitcom people when trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak English. It doesn't help to speak English more s l o w l y. If they don't understand you, they don't understand you.

Wish I knew what Chuey’s mother is saying when she embarks on a long soliloquy after Ward speaks a little Spanish.

What I don't understand is, if Mr. Varela is a diplomat, why does he not speak English as well as Spanish?

It's a great question. Maybe the producers said, just give a logical reply in Spanish, not even thinking or knowing what he said. Unless it was already established in English that he was a diplomat, which I don't remember.

Now that we find he’s a diplomat it is puzzling he didn’t speak English.

Good point. Added thought, unrelated: They should have kept that family in the cast. Integrating them into Mayfield, and Chuey gradually learning English, would have made a great addition.

Yeah but all the new characters introduced are MIA. Dudley McMillan, Jill Bartlett, Mary Tyler, Cindy Andrews, Ginny Townsend, etc. All disappeared. Little Linda Dennison became Alice.

Kenneth Purcell, Jackie Waters (good riddance!), Mary Margaret Matthews (a little late for her to reappear!), Alma Hanson, Dryden "Chopper" Cooper, the back of Angela Valentine's head, Larry's dad, Judy's dad, the overacting, emoting mothers of Benjie (Benjie's mother was a different actress later) and Chuckie, Pat Murdock, Lori Ann, Kathy Gregory and her kooky father, Melinda (sweetie pie) and Peggy from Don Juan B, Marlene, Jeff the bum, Andy Hadlock, Gloria Cusick (might be wrong on her), Mr. Gannon (ditto)...

It was probably because they could not be sure if they could have a particular actor back for another appearance, character actors being very busy and having multiple commitments.

Seems like the only actor who made a repeat visit was Edgar Buchanan as Uncle Billy. Madge Kennedy always played Aunt Martha throughout.

Pamela Beaird and Cheryl Holdridge also had multiple roles. A couple of other kid actors had very minor multiple roles, like Chrystie Jordan and Veronica Cartwright.
Some veteran bit players like Jean Vander Pyl had small, different one-time roles. |

They cut out a funny line from June. She had asked Mrs. Varela to sit on “la mesa.” Later after she leaves she asks Ward isn’t a chair la mesa? Ward says chair is la silla. June says heaven knows what I asked her to sit on. Mesa is table.
